TextTitan.com started as a Directed Individual Study, a class in which students develop research, scholarship, and inquiry skills under the supervision of a faculty mentor, at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Since Universities cannot give classes on every single topic that students would like to learn about, students have the option to take a Directed Individual Study class to help satisfy their curiosity.
        
        Having already established Mobile Education, Dr. Ron Vetter and Dr. Jeff Brown partnered with the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to bring interactive SMS message services to the campus. With a host of applications ranging from campus bus locations to dining menus at the campus chow hall, Mobile Education works hard to provide the latest and greatest SMS applications.

       Anyways, Wade Grant wanted to do a Directed Individual Study on Web Services. His project was to implement a web services server that communicated with Microsoft's Office Outlook 2007 using its built in Outlook Mobile Services feature while taking advantage of Mobile Education's SMS aggregator which allowed SMS messages to be sent.

       What is that you say? It has already been done? This is true, but to Dr. Google and my knowledge this has only been done using Microsoft's IIS server and their C# programming language. Nothing against Microsoft, but we decided to see if it was possible to do it Open Source Style. So after some hard work and lots of weird errors, TextTitan.com was born.
